Acrylic or glass: which is better for a campervan?

For most van conversions, a framed, double-glazed acrylic window is the better all-rounder: light, warm, easy to fit yourself and delivered with its own blind and mosquito net. Glass has genuine strengths too, mainly its hard, scratch-resistant surface and the flush, factory look of a bonded pane.

Neither material is better in every situation. They are simply built for different priorities, and the right choice depends on how you build the van and how you use it. You can compare every model in our campervan windows collection.

How do acrylic and glass campervan windows differ?

The main difference is how the pane is held in the van. Glass vehicle windows are usually toughened or laminated safety glass, often bonded flush to the bodywork. Acrylic conversion windows are usually double-glazed units set in an aluminium frame, and the frame does the work of clamping the window to the wall.

On a EuroVan window, the outer frame sits on the outside of the panel and a reinforced aluminium counter-frame is screwed from inside, so the wall is clamped between the two. That construction drives most of the practical pros and cons below: weight, insulation, fitting and the finish inside.

Is acrylic lighter and warmer than glass?

Yes, a double-glazed acrylic window is lighter than a glass window of the same size and keeps the van warmer than a single glass pane. In a conversion every kilogram counts towards your payload, and with several large windows the difference adds up.

Windows are usually the coldest surface in a van. Double glazing traps a layer of air between two panes, which slows heat loss and keeps the inner pane warmer. A warmer inner pane means less condensation running down the window on cold mornings.

Pick the tint to suit the room: dark (30% light transmission) for privacy in the bedroom or on the street side, light grey (70%) for a bright living area.

Does acrylic scratch, and how do you clean it?

Acrylic is softer than glass, so it can scratch if you wipe it dry or use an abrasive product. Clean it the right way and it stays clear for years. The glazing on our EuroVan windows is UV-protected.

1. Rinse first with plenty of clean water to float off dust and grit.
2. Wipe gently with a soft microfibre cloth and a mild, plastic-safe cleaner.
3. Avoid solvents, scouring pads and abrasive cloths.
4. Never rub dry dirt off the pane: soak it first, then wipe.

Glass tolerates casual cleaning better, which suits owners who want a wipe-and-go window. For most people, a gentle cleaning routine is well worth the weight, warmth and comfort of acrylic.

Which is easier to fit yourself: acrylic or glass?

Framed acrylic is much easier to fit yourself. Bonded glass is glued directly to the bodywork and more often calls for a professional and careful surface preparation. A EuroVan window fits in about one hour with two people:

1. Cut the opening with a jigsaw.
2. Fit a wooden batten frame, 25 mm minimum on a panel van.
3. Bed the window in Sikaflex 265.
4. Screw the aluminium counter-frame from inside.

Is an acrylic window less secure than glass?

Not in everyday use. Acrylic flexes under a knock instead of shattering into shards, and a double-glazed pane gives two layers rather than one. Glass is harder on the surface but can crack or shatter when it fails.

Are acrylic campervan windows road legal?

Yes, as long as they carry the right approval. EuroVan windows are ECE R43 approved, the European standard for vehicle glazing, and the certificate is supplied. They can be fitted without the vehicle manufacturer's approval and are accepted for conversion approval across Europe (for example TÜV in Germany), in the UK (DVLA, MOT) and in Switzerland (MFK).

Replacing an old caravan or motorhome window

Most caravans and motorhomes already use acrylic windows, so a replacement keeps the same material. EuroVan windows (except the VanCurve, designed for curved van walls) fit flat walls from 25 to 75 mm thick with their aluminium counter-frame.

So which should you choose?

Choose framed, double-glazed acrylic if you are converting the van yourself, want the lightest and warmest option and like the idea of a built-in blind and mosquito net. It is the practical choice for most self-builds, provided you clean the panes gently.

Lean towards bonded glass if a flush, stealthy exterior matters most, you want the hardest-wearing surface and you are happy to pay for professional bonding.
