Compressor or absorption fridge in a campervan?
For a campervan, a compressor fridge is usually the better choice: it is more efficient on 12 V, keeps cooling in hot weather and does not need the van to be parked level. An absorption (three-way) fridge runs on gas, 12 V or 230 V and is silent, but it has to be level and well ventilated, and it loses efficiency in the heat.

All of them run on 12 V or 24 V. None plugs straight into 230 V: on a campsite hook-up you add the 230V to 12V converter (10 A / 180 W).
SVR, DCR or BCD: which range for an under-worktop fridge?
Choose the SVR for the lowest consumption or a straight swap, the DCR for two independent temperature settings, and the BCD when the fridge front stays visible. All three exist in 50 L, which fits a seat box or a narrow cabinet at 38 cm wide.
- VanCool SVR (50 L, 85 L): 20–25 W in real use and 35 dB. It keeps the footprint and front panel of the Dometic compressor fridges it replaces, so it drops into an existing cabinet without recutting.
- VanCool DCR (50 to 105 L): the fridge and the freezer each have their own setting, so the freezer holds −18 °C while the fridge sits at +4 °C. Take out the divider and the whole cabinet becomes a fridge from −8 to +10 °C. Tall fridges and large volumes: RCN, 90 L DCR, 140 L, 150 L Slim and 170 L
If you have more height than width, a column fridge gives you the most litres for the floor space. The 90 L RCN and the 90 L DCR are both about 42 cm wide and replace the Dometic RC 10.4 and the Thetford T2090; the RCN has a 20 L bottom freezer, the DCR a 16 L freezer on its own setting.
For a motorhome that had a built-in three-way fridge, the 140 L, 150 L Slim and 170 L are sized to take its place and run on 12/24 V without gas. The 140 L and 170 L both have 112 L of fridge; the 170 L doubles the freezer to 58 L. The 150 L Slim is only 41.8 cm wide. On the 140 L and 170 L the feet come off, saving 3 cm and 5 cm of height. How much battery does a 12V compressor fridge use?
Most VanCool fridges draw 20 to 35 W in real use, about 2 to 3 A on a 12 V circuit, according to our product pages. The higher figure on the label (40 to 70 W depending on the model) is the compressor's maximum, reached only while it pulls the cabinet down to temperature.
To estimate a day, multiply the watts by 24 hours and divide by 12 V. For example, if the 85 L SVR averaged 25 W over 24 hours, that would be 25 × 24 ÷ 12 = 50 Ah; its product page gives 40 to 50 Ah a day. The DCR models are given at about 50 to 60 Ah a day. These are estimates: outside temperature, door openings and compressor cycling all change the result.
On that basis, a full 100 Ah lithium battery would cover very roughly two days of a 50 Ah fridge, with no charging and no other loads. For the 140 L and 170 L, plan on a 100 Ah battery as a minimum, 200 Ah if other equipment shares it. The full method is in how long a 12V fridge runs on a leisure battery.
On mains, plug the fridge in through the 230V to 12V converter (10 A / 180 W). Its 1/2/OFF selector switch lets the fridge stay wired to the battery too, drawing from one source at a time.

Campervan fridge checklist before you buy
Before ordering, check five things: dimensions, ventilation, door side, freezer temperature and wiring.
- Measure the cabinet (H × W × D) and compare it with the fridge, including the ventilation space.
- Leave room to breathe: the DCR pages ask for at least 10 cm free behind the fridge, with ventilation grilles, so the compressor can shed its heat.
- Pick the door side: put the hinges on the far side from where you stand. The SVR is ordered left or right, with a door-reversal kit supplied; the 40 L door is fixed.
- Check the freezer: −18 °C on most models, −12 °C on the 40 L.
- Plan the wiring: a fused 12 V or 24 V cable from your distribution box, no inverter.
